What makes a good swim mechanic? It takes knowledge, ability, and persistence to become a better swimmer and it takes more than just the love of swimming to fix a stroke.
Knowledge
The first characteristic that makes a good mechanic is knowledge. The complexity of swimming is evident in the various components involved. A good swim mechanic has a keen awareness of each of these individual parts and how they work together as a whole. As this is a day of specialists, a good swim mechanic also has specialized knowlege in areas such as pool swimming, open water swimming, swimming as a part of triathlon, fitness training, nutrition, etc. As you embark on your training, it’s a good idea to select a specific area, event, or distance that most interests you and learn everything you can about your particular area. Your swim mechanic will help you every stroke of the way!
Ability
Knowledge is only one part of the equation. Ability is developed by spending a great deal of time on that specific item. In addition to successfully competing at the national and world levels, your swim mechanic has spent many hours shadowing veteran mentors during testing and teaching to learn new theories, strategies, and efficiencies. What makes a good swim mechanic is how he or she transfers that knowledge from the training room into the water. With an excellent pool side demeanor, your swim mechanic will be in the water with you, showing you proper form, technique, and racing tips.
Persistence
Finally, persistence also helps to make a good swim mechanic. The simple fact is that you’re not always going to find and fix the repair the very first time you try. A problem could be caused by one of several different factors. A good swim mechanic, as well as student, has the patience and persistence to try several different drills or exercises until the proper form emerges.
Dedicated to fixing your swim!
